Contents of a "Me in 30 Seconds" Statement

If you are looking for a job, and a potential employer asks you, "Tell me about yourself," you have a short time to answer. Will your answer be memorable? If you are starting or growing a business, and a potential customer or client asks the same question, you must be able to quickly and effectively respond. A "Me in 30 Seconds" statement contains the following:

  • A brief introduction that includes your name and career objective. What do you want to do?
  • A list of 2-3 specific accomplishments that show you are a good fit for a job. If you are an entrepreneur, these should help a potential customer or client want to use your product or service.
  • A list of 2-3 character traits or skills that demonstrate your ability to get the job done.

If the person you are speaking to already knows your name, you can leave that part out. For the purposes of practicing however, keep your name at the beginning of the statement.

"Me in 30 Seconds" Example - Job Seeker
"My name is Josh Davenport. I am looking for a new job in computer support. I have two years of experience and carry several technical certifications. With my last company, I was named the top service technician last year because of my efficiency. I love organizing projects, and I make it a point to complete each on time, if not early. I know I could bring added efficiency to your organization."

"Me in 30 Seconds" Example - Entrepreneur
"My name is Pedro Santos. I am a fruit supplier, and I am looking to expand my business to as many shops on the west end of town as possible. I am registered with the Ministry of Commerce as a produce supplier. I am also licensed by the Ministry of Health to handle fresh foods safely. My business supplies 15 shops on the west end already and the owners love to work with me. I arrive early at the growers so I can get the best pick of the day. This helps me bring the freshest fruit to your shop. When you have happy customers, I am happy! Together, we can bring a smile to their faces."
